Word Search kids playing

This game can be played by pupils individually, in pairs or as a class on an interactive whiteboard. It can be used by children of Key Stage 2.

The first word-search can generate a discussion about Ulster-Scots words, and languages used locally. Children can refer back to the 'Word List' section to find out more about the meaning of the Ulster-Scots words and their pronunciation.

The second word-search relates to Ulster-Scots surnames. Children may like to refer to the Memory game which has a description of the origins of a number
of these surnames. The word-search can be used to generate
a discussion about names and the origins or meanings of names.

Pupils are learning to:

  • Spell and locate Ulster-Scots words or surnames.
  • Understand that different languages exist locally.
  • Read, learn, and understand the meaning of various Ulster-Scots words.
  • Understand that surnames have different origins.
  • Learn about the origins of some local surnames.
  • Communicate and play a game with a partner or group.
