Ulster-Scots Picture Word List:kids reading picture dictionary

This word list is perfect for younger children at Foundation or Key Stage 1. They can listen to the Ulster-Scots words and compare them to English and/or Irish versions. It provides an opportunity for pupils to talk about the meaning of Ulster-Scots and Irish words, and whether they have heard these words being used before. This should raise pupil awareness of some of the different languages spoken in their locality and enable them to compare the words.

Older pupils may enjoy saying the words in different languages and could undertake extension activities such as writing a poem including words from different traditions. Very young children may prefer to concentrate on the English words, associating these with their meanings.

Pupils are learning to:

  • Associate words with their meanings.
  • Understand that different languages are used locally.
  • Understand that languages are associated with different cultures and traditions.
  • Listen to, read, and say words in different languages.
  • Learn, and understand the meaning of various Ulster-Scots and Irish words.
  • Discuss words and meanings with others.
