Snap kids playing snap

This game can be played by pupils in pairs or is ideal for use on an interactive whiteboard. The game provides an opportunity for pupils to talk about the meaning of the Ulster-Scots words and if they have ever heard these words being used before. It may familiarise pupils with the meaning of words spoken in their locality. They can read the Ulster-Scots words, and compare the similarities and differences between these and English words.

You can refer back to the Ulster-Scots 'Word List' to help children with the meaning and pronunciation of the words.

The game is suitable for use with younger and older pupils, although younger pupils may prefer to match the pictures rather than words. They may also require a demonstration of how to play the game.

Pupils are learning to:

  • Compare and match pictures and/or words.
  • Understand that different languages exist locally.
  • Read, learn, and understand the meaning of various Ulster-Scots words.
  • Communicate and play a game with a partner.
