Ulster-Scots Word List: kids holding letters

This reference section gives a brief description about the origins of the Ulster-Scots language. Children can use this section to compare English and Ulster-Scots words, and translate English words into Ulster-Scots. They can hear how both the English and Ulster-Scots versions of words are pronounced.

The 'Word List' enables children to develop language awareness and can be used to generate discussions about languages used locally (e.g. English, Irish, Ulster-Scots, and Ulster-English) and the origin of words. Pupils can listen to the Ulster-Scots words to see if they recognise or use any of these, and whether they are aware of any other words which have the same meaning. Older pupils could be encouraged to write a story or poem in Ulster-Scots, using the 'Word List' to help.

The resource can be use individually, in pairs, small groups, or as a class discussion task using an interactive whiteboard.

Pupils are learning to:

  • Understand that different languages are used locally.
  • Understand the origins of Ulster-Scots words.
  • Read, learn, and understand the meaning of various Ulster-Scots words.
  • Understand that different words can be used to mean the same thing.
  • Write in the Ulster-Scots tradition and use new vocabulary.
