Off To Scotland Scotland here we go!

The aim of the booklet is for pupils to organise and plan a trip to Scotland . They have to make various decisions such as who to take, where to go, how to travel, where to stay, and what to do whilst there. To do this they must compare different options, weighing up the pros and cons of each e.g. cost and length of journey. Pupils are also required to review and justify choices.

In helping pupils plan their journey they are presented with various tasks, such as measuring distances on maps, finding out about places in Scotland , and understanding how Scotland and Ireland are connected by different transport links.

The booklet takes pupils through an Internet journey, where they learn to research information, as well as navigate websites, and book ferries or flights online.

The final task requires pupils to consolidate all the information about their trip and present it in the form of an advertisement. This requires higher order thinking skills, as pupils need to order, analyse and synthesise data to ensure key information is displayed.

The booklet can be carried out by pupils individually, in pairs, or in groups. However, discussions are strongly encouraged, particularly when evaluating options. The booklet can be used with younger or older pupils, but younger pupils may require greater guidance and structure. The booklet could be expanded on by encouraging pupils to plan a similar journey to a country of their choice, e.g. 'Off to America '.
