...Ulsterman Frank Pantridge introduced Belfast surgeons to the operation of mitral valvotomy in 1949?

Over 2,500 patients benefited from this treatment. In 1951, Pantridge was appointed Consultant Physician at "The Royal" in Belfast.  Two years later he became Physician of the Cardiac Department which he developed into an international renowned unit.  He remained there until he retired in 1984.
