Step into the rich rhythm and resonance of the Ulster-Scots tongue with this hands-on creative writing masterclass, led by writer and mentor Anne McMaster.
This special workshop invites participants of all backgrounds – whether you're a complete beginner, a curious explorer of Ulster-Scots culture, or someone who holds treasured memories of the hamely tongue – to rediscover the words and sounds that shaped our stories, songs, and everyday speech.
Together, you'll explore the living language of Ulster-Scots, uncover lost or familiar expressions, and use them to inspire fresh creative writing.
Spaces are limited, so pre-booking is essential. Workshop is for those aged 16+.

Anne McMaster’s recent work includes Póames (2022), a collection of Ulster-Scots poetry published by the Ulster-Scots Agency and Ulster-Scots Community Network. Her upcoming collection of lullabies in Ulster-Scots, Ma Shinin Star, will launch in November 2025. Anne brings a wealth of experience as a former director of the Spread the Word Literary Festival and as a key member of the A Modest Proposal creative team. She currently mentors Sheddas on Tha Page – emerging Ulster-Scots writers – and hosts online readings that celebrate this vibrant literary tradition. Her exploration of women’s Ulster-Scots writing was featured in the BBC1 NI documentary Out of the Silence.
