Coleraine Twelfth Festival kicks off on Thursday 4th July with a programme that has something for everyone including traditional music & dance, historical workshops and walks.

The focus on the opening day will be in the Diamond where you can celebrate the Ulster-Scots contribution to America with traditional music and dance while learning about the 1718 migration from the Bann Valley.

Then on Friday 5th there will be a concert in Coleraine Town Hall with local group the Ulster-Scots Experience while on Saturday 6th the town centre will come alive with an afternoon of traditional music and dance in the Diamond.

The exhibition in Coleraine Town Hall will open on Saturday morning at 10.30am and run through to 2.30pm on Thursday 11th July and will this year feature Grand Orange Lodge of Irelands ‘Soul of a Nation’ exhibition, with Coleraine being the first venue outside of Belfast.

There’s an opportunity to learn a bit about the rich history of Coleraine, site of the oldest known human settlement in Ireland, when local historian George Dallas will talk his way round the town on the ever popular town walks on Monday 8th. Then on Tuesday George will again, in his entertaining style, share his knowledge about the rich history of the town at a workshop in Coleraine Ulster-Scots Resource Centre.

On Wednesday 10th July the festival crosses the river to Christie Park for the Family Fun Evening where local bands, including flute, accordion and bagpipe will be joined by Lambegs and fifes to provide the musical entertainment before the annual fireworks display over the River Bann. There will also be a river rescue display, children’s fun day, BBQ and lots more.

The festival will finish this year on Thursday 11th July with the town centre again being the venue for an outdoor workshop when we’ll celebrate the 400th anniversary of the town charter which will include traditional music and dance. Coleraine Ulster-Scots Resource Centre are staging an Old Town Fayre as part of the Coleraine 400 celebrations on the same afternoon in the Diamond adding an extra dimension to the festivities.

A festival spokesperson said “We’re confident we’ve something for everyone yet again in the varied programme of events being rolled out in this year’s festival despite having been forced to make cutbacks due to the current economic climate. The educational value of the festival is as great as ever but it’s combined with entertainment and fun for all ages. We’re very grateful to our funders the Ulster-Scots Agency and Coleraine Borough Council and we also want to say thank you to all the local bands and other organisations who have stepped forward and are giving their services free of charge to help us put on the usual high standard of entertainment the community has come to expect.”
