Over 200,000 fleadh goers are expected to visit Cavan this August for what is expected to be a milestone in the new order of friendship and co-operation which now exists on the whole island. It will be a memorable homecoming for the Irish Diaspora and friends of Irish culture.

Fleadh Cheoilnah Éireann 2010 gets underway in Cavan on 16th August with Scoil Éigse workshops for adults and children. The serious end of the Fleadh is at the weekend withhundreds of competitions in Irish culture for all ages concluding with The All-Ireland Ceili Band ‘play off’ in the Quinn direct Dome on Sunday night.The week will be filled with events and classes ‘as Gaeilge’.
A prime public entertainment location of the Fleadh will be the Peace III Gig Rig at the Egg Market where performances will reflect Irish, European and cross community themes,commencing with the Nyah Youth Peace Project Band on Wednesday 18thAugust. Other evenings will have Italian band WilloS, the Haworth Arts Group Yorkshire, Chicago based Fermanagh flute player Laurence Nugent, piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn, USA harmonica expert Don Meade, Italian fiddler Marco Fabbri an Irish trad. bandRí Ra from the Czech Republic, all supported by well known Irish artists.
At the official opening on Friday night at the Gig Rig, Sean Ó Sé will lead a ‘United Voices’ sing- along to many of his popular hits. Sharon Shannon and guests will play the final night. The top attraction will be Paul Brady and guests playing at Cavan Equestrian Centre on Friday 20th.
There will be a nightly Traditional Singing Club in the Farnham Hotel from 16th,whichwill extend over the week with storytelling concerts and get-togethers at other locations.In Cavan Town Hall, the late night Fleadh club will run from Friday, commencing with Old deDanann, Louth and Proud with Zoe Conway on Saturday and ending with Lúnasa on Sunday. All-day Set Dancing takes place daily at the Cavan Crystal from Thursday through to Sunday, and at theDúnUíNéill Barracks, Dublin Rd., each night over the weekend with well known céilí bands supplying the music. There will be a Youth Céilí in the Farnham Hotel on Wed.
There will be many fringe events for all the family throughout the week; - A Craft Village, Art exhibitions at the Anglo Celt and Bullock Lane Centre and MórtasanChabháin Art work on display throughout the town. Sunday will see the Anglo-Celt’s street session and busking competition winner named following the final on the Gig Rig on Sunday evening.
Above all it will be the numerous impromptu sessions, which will entertain the masses, while creating that special Fleadh atmosphere through the week and especially over the weekend, in Cavan’s many engaging bars, restaurants and commercial outlets.
HIDDEN GEMS
Radio naGaelteacht will broadcast live a special Mass in Irish for Fleadh goes on Sunday at 11.30am, from The Cathedral of St.Patrick and Felim when Eileen Tackney’s arrangement of ‘A MhuirenaGrás’ will have it’s first public performance, sung by solo soprano with choir and accompanied by Strings, Uillean Pipes, Accordion and Piano.
The ‘Round the House and Mind the Dresser’ interactive exhibition of traditional Irish music, song and dance at the County Cavan Museum, Ballyjamesduff is a must during the Fleadh for all Irish music fans.
PEACE EVENT
Peace Boat – Thursday 19th August a journey on the peace boat from Co. Fermanagh to Co. Cavan for a day of music, song and storytelling. Boat departs from the Share Centre, near Lisnaskea at 1.00pm and will arrive at Belturbet at 3.30pm. food in Belturbet and then coach to Cavan to participate in Youth Multi-Cultural Celebration with ‘Doors to Life under one umbrella’.
