Overview

Developing the public’s understanding of Ulster-Scots language and culture is one of the key areas for the Ulster-Scots Agency as detailed in its Corporate Plan 2000/1-2003/4.

The Agency recognises the need to communicate with all audiences – i.e. Ulster-Scots and non-Ulster-Scots, as to why the movement has a value. It needs to explain what the culture is about, why the language has survived and why it should continue to survive in a way that adds positively to life within the island of Ireland.

Ulster-Scots today has a voice and identity thanks to recent initiatives from the Agency. The instigation of the first Ulster-Scots language column in the Belfast News Letter, the publishing of the ‘Ulster-Scot’ newspaper and this website all help in explaining the culture and language.
