Jimmy Carter applauds musical 'On Eagle's Wing'

Former United States President Jimmy Carter has given the new Scots-Irish musical 'On Eagle's Wing' a tremendous personal endorsement.

In a letter to Lord Laird of Artigarvan, chairman of the Ulster-Scots Agency, Mr Carter said that the stage show, which traces the movements of the Scots-Irish from here to the USA, was sure to promote the parity of esteem initiated with the Belfast Agreement of 1998.

President Carter added: "Just as Riverdance was successful in portraying Irish culture through music and dance, so will On Eagle's Wing facilitate a better appreciation for the story of the Scots-Irish.

"I wish this production every success in achieving its goal of education, enlightenment and entertainment as it supports efforts towards  reconciliation, peace and acceptance of cultural differences."

The Carter commendation for the show, written and produced by John Anderson, came after a special presentation was arranged in Atlanta, Georgia on June 7.

More then 100 of Atlanta's society leaders heard musical star Peter Corry sing several songs from the show accompanied by champion piper Robert Watt.

Lord Laird said: "The concept of the musical went down a storm in Atlanta and it gives us all great hope for the musical's local premiere at the Odyssey this autumn and a tour of the USA next year.

"!I was personally greatly touched and motivated by Mr Carter's letter and it proves once and for all the respect that American presidents have for the Scots-Irish contribution to their country."

He continued: "Jimmy Carter was shrewd in recognising that the musical was an excellent way to further the Belfast Agreement's provision for both Northern Ireland and the Republic to attempt to understand and respect each other's culture.

"But above all, On Eagle's Wing is a superbly dramatic, entertaining and moving musical show that tells a wonderfully epic story very well."
