Ards Peninsula Festival

The Ulster Scots Agency and Ards and North Down Borough Council are partnering to host the Ards Peninsula Festival from 4th September - 10th September in various locations across the Ards Peninsula.

Sunday 4th September - Cockle Row Cottages, Groomsport 2-4pm

  • Risin Stour (Music from this popular traditional Ulster-Scots Folk Group)
  • Historical re-enactors; “James Hamilton” and “Robert Blair” amongst others will tell you the history of the Ulster-Scots in the area.
  • Blacksmith display and soda bread making.
  • Children’s entertainment including “Plant and Play” and craft making.

Monday 5th September - Comber

  • Comber Library, 7:30-8.30pm. Alistair McReynolds: History of Bluegrass talk.
  • McBrides on the Square 9pm. Down and Out Bluegrass Band.

Tuesday 6th September - Newtownards

  • Ards Arts Centre (Conway Square), 7:30-8.30pm. Dr David Hume: on 1798 talk
  • Molly Browns, 9pm. Stonewall Traditional Ulster-Scots Folk Group.

Wednesday 7th September – Holywood

  • History of Holywood Guided Walk, 2.30–4pm

Enjoy a stroll through Holywood’s colourful history from the monastic settlement to the Motte where King John is said to have spent the night and the Praegers’, Robert Sullivan, the Scottish settlers influence on the town.

Tickets:  £3*. Tour departs from outside the Maypole Bar, High Street, Holywood.

  • Holywood Library, 7.30-8.30pm. Billy Kennedy: The Voyage of the Eagle Wing talk.
  • Jonny the Jig, 9pm. Cup O’Joe, Bluegrass, Gospel, Gypsy Swing.

Thursday  8th September - Bangor

  • Bangor Library, 7.30-8.30pm. "Tim McGarry's Ulster-Scots Odyssey. 

Tim McGarry talks about his personal journey from knowing little and caring less about Ulster Scots to becoming someone who enjoys and respects all aspects of Ulster Scots culture. There may be jokes." Free event but Ticket only*

  • Hop House, High Street, 9pm. Cup O’Joe, Bluegrass, Gospel, Gypsy Swing.

Friday 9th September - Ballywalter

  • Ballywalter Presbyterian Church Hall, 7.30pm. Concert featuring Ulster-Scots music, dancing, poetry and singing. Compered by Willie Cromie.

  • Wednesday 7th, Ballywalter Orange Hall, 7.30pm. Mark Thompson and Phillip Robinson. A talk on the Ulster-Scots Language.
  • Tuesday 13th, Ballywalter Village Hall, 7.30pm. Alister McReynolds: "Kith and Kin" The Ulster-Scots in America talk.

Saturday 10th September – Donaghadee

  • Donaghadee Library, 1-2pm – Matthew Warwick Hamilton & Montgomery talk.
  • “Dander Round the Dee” walk, 2.30-4pm. (Departs from the Library).

Discover the stories behind the buildings and hear how Montgomery and his followers arrived in 1606 to help shape present day Donaghadee. Tickets:  £3*.
