Thomas Andrews Shipbuilder Talk - Portaferry

22 August 2016, 13:30, Portaferry Library, 47 High St, Portaferry BT22 1QU

Runs to 22 August 2016

Laura Spence will be hosting a talk on Thomas Andrews Shipbuilder on Monday 22nd August at 1.30pm in Portaferry Library. This event is free to attend.

Laura Spence is co-author (with Desmond Rainey) of “A Chronicle of Comber: Town of Thomas Andrews, Shipbuilder (1873-1912)" which immediately sold out in its first edition and has now been reprinted,

Thomas Andrews Junior was Chief Engineer in what was then the largest shipyard in the world, Harland and Wolff.  He was born and grew up in the mill town of Comber, County Down, where his family had lived and worked for generations.  He was chief designer of the ill-fated RMS Titanic, and was lost when the ship foundered after hitting an iceberg.

This talk provides a background to the Andrews family, taking you on a ‘virtual tour’ of places associated with the famous shipbuilder, and considering the impact of the tragic events of 1912.
