The US American Trail Hosted by Brookmount Cultural & Education Society
LOW QUARTER ORANGE HALL, 37a BALLINDERRY RD, MAGHERAGALL, LISBURN. - 29 June to 4 July 2009

“THE ULSTER SCOTS AMERICAN TRAIL”

An estimated quarter of a million people emigrated from the north of Ireland to America through the 18th century, most of them of Scottish Presbyterian stock whose ancestors had moved to Ulster during the Plantation years of the 17th century. Religious persecution and economic and social deprivation were the main causes for the movement across the Atlantic, with the offer of a new life in rich and fertile surroundings helping to persuade many to forsake their homeland. These hardy resolute immigrants became first citizens of American frontier lands opened up in the movement from the eastern seaboard regions of the New World and, over several generations, they created settlements that were to become the backbone of the United States as a nation. Seventeen of the 43 American Presidents are generally accepted as being of Ulster ancestry.

From Folk to Country
How the Ulster-Scots influenced music in America

The distinctive styles of many modern day American country, bluegrass and folk music performers can be traced directly back to the 18th century Ulster-Scots or Scots-Irish settlers. And the dance tradition of Appalachian region in the south eastern part of the United States has also very strong Ulster-Scots roots.

Did you know that Ulstermen rebelled against the whiskey tax in Pennsylvania 1794 saying, "It was a man's right to either eat or drink his corn".

Brookmount Cultural & Education would like to acknowledge the support of the “Ulster Scots Agency” and Lisburn City Council “Community Festival Fund”.

Ballycarry

The 17th annual Broadisland Gathering will take place in Ballycarry during the first week in September, with the main Gathering Day being on Saturday, September 5th 2009.

This year the Gathering marks the 400th anniversary of Ballycarry, and there is set to be a high local history content to the event, with an open invite to all Ballycarry exiles abroad to come home to the village for the Gathering.

On September 5th there will be the usual pipes and pageantry, with musical entertainment including Rising Stour, the Seven Towers Ceilidh Band, first class Drum Major displays, and the only townland banner parade in Ireland.

Events take off throughout the afternoon of September 5th and there will be an especial welcome for all international visitors to the event, of which they are always a good number. Last year a group from Spain visited and enjoyed the day in Ballycarry, for example!

Surrounding the Gathering there will be a "Stepping into History" event which will see a living history re-enactment of various figures from the past of the district over the past 400 years, while there will also be a history hike around the village with local historians and a car boot sale for those looking for bargains.
