Pupils of the Boys' Model School have been developing their Ulster-Scots culture, through an initiative directed by the Ulster-Scots Agency which involved a 10-week Lambeg drum and fife workshop. It turned out to be a resounding success and as a result, in September, a second workshop of drumming and fife-playing began in the school for a 24-week period. Twenty boys were involved – 16 drummers and four fife players. As a result of the success of the workshops, the school decided to investigate acquiring its own Lambeg drum.
Over the past four months, the boys have been given an opportunity to see a drum being made and become involved in the aunnting design.
Sharon Baird, head of music at the school, said: “The initiative has sparked a keen interest in Northern Ireland’s culture among the pupils and has given them a desire to learn more about our heritage.”
