Centenary celebrations for Donegal pipe band

A very special event for Thiepval Memorial Pipe Band, Convoy, Co Donegal, marked the centenary of the band.

The dinner dance and disco in Jackson's Hotel, Ballybofey, began with a drum major display from four young drum majors; Kiera Wilson, the 2005 Champion of Champions in her grade; Lorna Robinson, Gary Scanlon and Philip McGonigle.

Former world champion Paula Braiden, who was presented with gifts on the night, tutors them.  The band then took the floor with a selection of tunes and drill display under the command of Pipe Major Alyson McKnight.

Chairman of the band, Willie Buchanan welcomed everyone.  A large celebration cake was carried in and the candles blown out by Willie, longest serving member of the band with 49 years service, and Sammy Parker, oldest past band member present.

Mrs Pamela Smyth, secretary, presented a brief history of the band and outlined their recent achievements culminating in runners-up position at the world pipe band championships in 2004.

Finbar Connolly, honorary secretary of the Irish Pipe Band Association, congratulated the band on their 100th anniversary.  Finbar had travelled from Dublin especially to be present and his presence added much to the occasion.

Jim Devenney, vice-chairman of the Ulster-Scots Agency, spoke eloquently about the meaning of the name Thiepval Memorial, as a tribute to the many local young men who had lost their lives in Thiepval Woods on July 1, 1916, in one of the worst battles of the First World War.

Donegal Councillor Patrick McGowan also paid tribute to these young men and also wished the band all the best for the future.  Alan Laird, vice-chairman thanked everyone for coming.

The evening continued with an excellent supper followed by music from the "Foot Tappers".  Derek Anthony followed this with a disco.  A great evening was had by all and the band look forward to another 100 years of success representing their county and country at national and international level.
