OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES AND RISKS

                                             

The Ulster-Scots Agency acts in partnership with organisations that are committed to the maintenance and development of Ulster-Scots language, culture and history.

 

The Ulster-Scots Agency seeks to take advantage of opportunities to:

 

·   promote a greater sense of identity in the Ulster-Scots community;

 

·   promote the Ulster-Scots language, culture and history throughout the Island of Ireland.

 

·   Engage with cultural and linguistic organisations and individuals outside Ireland and with the wider Ulster Scots Diaspora in the furtherance of promotion of Ulster Scots language or cultural issues within the island of Ireland.

 

·   be involved in the European movement for the recognition of minority languages;

 

·   learn from the experience of other minority languages;

 

·   play a part in supporting the relevant strategic objectives of the two sponsoring Departments.

 

·   Assist in the implementation of the European Charter for regional or minority languages

 

The Ulster-Scots Agency recognises that there are challenges to be met if the corporate plan is to achieve its objectives.

 

These challenges are summarised as follows:

 

·   low public awareness;

 

 

·   the linguistic debate about the language, locally and in Scotland;

 

·   the future of the Ulster-Scots language;

 

·   the expectations of the Ulster Scots cultural sector.

 

Equally, the Ulster-Scots Agency is aware that there are risks that may influence its ability to fulfil its remit.

 

These include:

 

 

The Ulster-Scots Agency will ensure effective management of these risks.

 

Through the implementation of this plan, the Ulster-Scots Agency will contribute to a revival of awareness and appreciation of the rich and diverse linguistic and cultural heritage of our society.

 

The Ulster-Scots Agency contribution will require the engagement of social partners across Ireland, in Scotland, in Europe and with the Diaspora of the Ulster-Scots throughout the world.
