Ulster-Scots history conference planned in Ballycarry
Ballycarry is the venue for an Ulster-Scots history conference on Saturday June 14. The event is the brainchild of the village Community Association and will be held between 11am and 3pm.
Guest speakers who have to date confirmed their attendance include Stephen Cameron, author of the recent history on the loss of the Princess Victoria in January 1953.
Stephen will be focusing on the story of the sinking of the vessel, one of the modern elements of the Ulster-Scottish connection.
Among other speakers will be Sam Cross, of Larne and District Folklore Society, who will focus on dialect from Magheramorne and surrounding districts, particularly examining how dialect has changed over the years. Another speaker will be Ulster-Scots linguist Dr Philip Robinson.
There will also be a guided tour of historical sites in the centre of Ballycarry while the village's unique townland banners will also be on display for the occasion.
The organisers say that the one-day conference is intended to appeal to as many people as possible, and they are hoping to attract visitors from outside as well as locals from the community itself.
Further details on the event are available from the community office on 93 37 20 24.
