Storytelling Workshops

Are you interested in learning the art of ‘Storytelling’?

Have you got time to commit to a programme taken by professional storytellers teaching the skills and techniques required? If so read on…..

The Agency is very keen to support the development of this type of community based skill and will be running a number of workshops aimed at equipping aspiring Ulster-Scots story tellers. The programme will be run to meet the needs of the participants and financial support will be forthcoming from the Agency to cover the costs for those with an interest in supporting the story telling tradition in Ulster.

Cairncastle Programme of Events
- Monday 11th February to Sunday 27th July, 2008

Monthly Soirees will take place on the last Wednesday of each month in Cairncastle Orange Hall 8.00pm (4 miles north of larne).

This year will see the group travelling to the West Coast of Scotland on the 16th and 17th of May along with the Ulster Scots Folk Orchestra and The Grousebeaters to take part in the launch of a 2 day Ulster Scots Folk Festival in Ardrossan and Cumnock.

The Committee has built up close links with these new Ulster Scots groups, and the two Festivals (i.e. The Cairncastle 4 Day Ulster Scots Folk Festival and The west Coast of Scotland Festival)will work closely together in promoting our Culture and bringing visitors to both Festivals.

On Monday 19th May an invitation has been received from 'The Burns and All That Society' to perform at a multi cultural event in Stevenson, Ayrshire where we would be able to promote our culture, as their will be performers from various parts of the world at this event.

The Cairncastle four-day Ulster-Scots Folk Festival will take place from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th July, 2008. Venue: Cairncastle Orange Hall, 5 Drumnagreagh Road, Larne, BT40 2RP

Ulster-Scots Heritage Programme of Events
Bushmills

The Bushmills Ulster-Scots Heritage is a community group recently set up in Bushmills.

Programme of events:

Scottish Country Dancing with May Rooney from the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. Monday 3rd March - 28th April 2008 (with the exception of 17th and 24th March) 7.30pm in Dunluce Parish Centre, Bushmills.

Lambeg Drumming Lessons with local musician Peter Robinson will continue on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm in the Mill Restaurant, Bushmills. Light refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday 12th March – An evening of Ulster-Scots Music with Ptarmigan at 7.30pm in the Mill Restaurant, Bushmills. Opportunities will be available to sign up for the
10 week course in the tin whistle.

Friday 14th March - A weekend celebration of Ulster Scots music, culture and heritage. This will start with an evening of Ulster-Scots entertainment in Dunluce Parish Centre, Bushmills from 6-10pm. Our featured entertainment includes
Scottish Country Dancing with May Rooney, music from Ptarmigan and the Grouse Beaters, an Ulster-Scots Stew, an informative talk on tartans from Dr Clifford Smyth and a special musical performance form the Ulster-Scots Experience.

Saturday 15th March - Celebrations will continue with a Coach Tour which will take in places of local Ulster Scots Interest. The day will start with an Ulster-Scots Fry in local restaurant 1608. Packed lunches will be provided. The tour, which will be facilitated by Geologist Jon Marshall, will depart at 10.30am and will aim to return to Bushmills by 4.30pm. The evening will be rounded off by a spectacular fireworks display. This will take place from 7.30pm in Dundarave Coach Park, Bushmills.

Tuesday 18th March - A taster evening in the Art of Storytelling with John and Noreen Hamilton. 7.30pm in theMill Rest, Bushmills. A ten week course in storytelling to follow.

Wednesday 19th March - The Bushmills Ulster-Scots Heritage is proud to present a course in the traditional Ulster-Scots instrument, the Tin Whistle. The course lasts for 10 weeks in Bushmills Presbyterian Church Hall, 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

Wednesday 26th March - Bushmills Ulster-Scots Heritage public meeting with the presentation of certificates to those who completed our course in Ulster and Scottish Studies. There will also be a recital by the Ulster-Scots Orchestra. 7.30pm in The Mill Restaurant, Bushmills.

Monday 31st March – Taster evening in the Fife with tubes McIntyre at 7.30pm in Dundarave Community House. A full course will follow beginning on Friday 4th April at 7.30pm in Dundarave Community House.

Wednesday 30th April - Bushmills Ulster Scots Heritage PublicMeeting with entertainment, 7.30pm in the Mill Restaurant, Bushmills.More details to follow.

Monday 5th May – Closing date for Primary Schools Ulster Scots Oral Poetry Competition.

“Freedom's Frontier” - Ulster-Scots Historical Drama
Newtownards - Friday 2nd to Saturday 3rd May, 2008

The Web Theatre, Newtownards will play host to the captivating historical drama “Freedom's Frontier” on Friday 2nd May – Saturday 3rd May, 2008, as part of Ards Borough Council’s ‘Lough Lively Festival’

‘Freedom’s Frontier’ is a compelling drama set in 1731 which follows members of the Armstrong and Maharg families as they struggle with the concept of leaving their County Down homeland to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to America and to freedom - it’s a tale of the Ulster Scots and the foundation of a nation on the other side of the world.
