James Fenton

James Fenton, born in 1931, grew up in the adjoining townlands of Drumadarragh and Ballinaloob, County Antrim.  Educated at Stranmillis College and Queen's University, he spent his working life as a teacher and principal in Belfast, and lives in Glengormley.

He is the author of  'The Hamely Tongue, published by Ullans, the publishing house of The Ulster-Scots Language Society.  This book is an authentic and extensive collection of Ulster-Scots words and phrases currently in use in Country Antrim. 

James published his first collection of poetry 'Thonner an Thon' in 2001 (also published by Ullans, the publishing house of The Ulster-Scots Language Society) and is now in much demand for readings at various local literary festivals.

'The Hamely Tongue' gave us a comprehensive record of contemporary Ulster-Scots; now, in the poems and prose of 'Thonner an Thon', the writer's native language comes vividly alive.
